Workshops & Experiences in Lecce

This page holds what does not fit the other pages, and in Lecce that is mostly craft. Papier-mâché, cartapesta, has been made in the city since at least the 17th century, and the workshops let you shape a piece yourself. There are also stone-carving and painting sessions, and a children’s workshop.

Good to know: These are short sessions of roughly one to three hours, usually in small groups in a studio in the old town. Check the language of the instructor and whether the finished piece can be taken home, because some workshops fire or dry it first. Lecce also sells City Pass-style tickets that bundle sights; compare what is actually included.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lecce have a beach?

No. Lecce lies inland, roughly 12 km from the Adriatic and 25 km from the Ionian Sea. San Cataldo, about 15 km from the centre, is the beach local people use; the better-known swimming spots of the Salento, such as Otranto, Gallipoli and Porto Cesareo, are further away.

Where do the boat tours to the sea caves start?

Not in Lecce. They leave from the coast, most from Santa Maria di Leuca and Torre Vado at the southern tip, about 70 km and roughly an hour by road from Lecce. Plan the drive or a transfer as part of the day.

How far are Otranto, Gallipoli and Leuca from Lecce?

By road, Gallipoli is about 40 to 50 minutes, Otranto about 55 minutes (59 km) and Santa Maria di Leuca about an hour. These are rounded driving times without traffic; in July and August the coast roads are slower.

Do I need a car in Lecce?

Not for the city: the old town is compact and walkable. For the coast, buses and regional trains run from Lecce, for example to Gallipoli in about 50 minutes by bus, but the services are infrequent according to route planners. A car or a day tour makes it easier to combine several coastal towns.

Are Alberobello and Matera a sensible day trip from Lecce?

They are possible, but they are not close. The tours from Lecce to Alberobello, Locorotondo and Ostuni run about eight hours, and Matera is in another region, Basilicata. Bari and Brindisi are nearer to these places, so read the departure time and the time spent in each town.

How do I get to Lecce from the airport?

The nearest airport is Brindisi, with a shuttle bus that takes about 40 minutes. Bari airport is much further, roughly 150 km, and needs a train via Bari central station. Check current timetables before you fly.
