Car Hire in Lecce: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Extras Mean?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
The cheapest Lecce rental is not necessarily the cheapest contract. Before paying, open the conditions for the exact car and find the damage excess, theft excess, security deposit, accepted payment card, fuel policy and mandatory fees. CDW may be included while a sizeable excess remains. The deposit is different again: it is money or card limit held as security. No single amount is valid across Lecce because suppliers, vehicle groups and protection packages set different terms.
Compare Lecce car-hire offers, then read the conditions attached to the offer you actually intend to book.
Excess and deposit answer different questions
The excess is the portion of an eligible damage or theft claim left to the renter under the contract. It does not mean every possible incident is covered up to that figure. Glass, tyres, roof, underside, keys and incorrect fuel may have separate exclusions.
The deposit secures possible charges such as damage, missing fuel, fines or late return. It may be blocked rather than charged, but it still reduces the available limit on the card. Check the required card type and name. An offer may require a physical credit card belonging to the main driver; a companion’s card may not be accepted.
CDW is not the same as zero liability
CDW limits liability for qualifying collision damage according to the rental agreement. “CDW included” does not by itself promise zero excess or protection for every part of the car. Full protection bought through a comparison site can also work as reimbursement: the rental company may still hold its normal deposit and charge first, while you claim later.
A waiver sold at the desk may reduce the supplier’s own excess or deposit, but only the written terms show that. Ask for the total price and the remaining excess before accepting an upgrade. Do not rely on a verbal “fully covered”.
Extras that change the final price
With full-to-full fuel, collect with a full tank and return it full; keep the final receipt if the contract asks for it. Prepaid fuel follows a different rule and unused fuel may not be refunded.
An additional driver can attract a daily charge. Minimum age, time holding a licence and young-driver fees vary by supplier and car class, so check rather than assuming a Lecce-wide rule. The same applies to child seats: reserve them, but confirm availability directly.
Collection location matters. A desk in Lecce and one at Brindisi Airport can have different hours, location fees and late-arrival procedures. Supplying a flight number helps the desk track a delay; it is not a guarantee that staff wait indefinitely. Cross-border travel, one-way return and out-of-hours collection need explicit permission where the contract requires it.
Check the car as carefully as the contract
At collection, photograph the bodywork, wheels, glass, interior, mileage and fuel gauge in good light. Have missing marks added to the report before leaving. At return, ask for written confirmation of the car’s condition. If a key box is the only option, photograph where and when you parked and returned the key.
For a Lecce holiday, also decide whether you need the car every day. A short coastal rental can cost more per day but less overall than keeping it while the historic centre is explored on foot.
What to choose
Choose the offer whose deposit fits your card limit and whose exclusions you understand. A slightly higher headline price can be better value when the fuel rule is clear, the card requirement works for you and the excess is manageable. If any of those fields is missing, ask before the free-cancellation deadline rather than solving it at the desk.
