Leuca Boat Tours: Which Cave Tour Is Worth Taking?
Updated October 19, 2026 · 6 min read
Santa Maria di Leuca sits at the very tip of the Salento heel, where the Ionian and Adriatic coasts meet. The cliffs on both sides are full of sea caves, and most of them can only be seen from the water.
From Lecce it is about 70 km by road, so this is a day out, not a detour. The question is which of the many near-identical trips to book.
What every trip has in common
Read the listings side by side and the pattern is clear. You meet at the tourist port, the skipper takes you along one coast, you stop to swim, and you come back. Several listings say plainly that the skipper chooses the Adriatic or the Ionian side on the day, depending on the sea. So you cannot book a specific cave, and you should not expect to be able to.
Cave names that turn up in operator descriptions include the Grotta del Diavolo, known for its echo, the Grotta delle Tre Porte and the Grotta del Presepe. Treat them as possibilities, not promises.

Choosing
For most people, the €36 three-hour trip is the safe choice. It has the most reviews of any Leuca trip by a wide margin, 723, and a 4.7 average. Three hours leave room for more than one cave stop and a proper swim.
The €31.50 trip is the better value if the aperitif is not the point. Its rating of 4.8 comes from 463 reviews and it costs less than the leader. The listing talks about caves, bays and a swim stop and does not mention food.
Take the snorkelling trip if you will actually get in the water. At €37.44 it has the highest rating of the three-hour trips in the table, 4.9 from 398 reviews, and the listing says the equipment is provided. If you only want to look at caves, you pay for something you will not use.
The two shorter trips are for tight schedules or tight budgets. The 2-hour trip at €20 is the cheapest, and the listing mentions free parking, which matters in a small port in summer. The 1.5-hour trip at €25 works out dearer per hour than every longer trip and has the lowest rating of the group, 4.5, so it is hard to recommend over the 2-hour version.
The kayak tour is a different thing. At €55 it costs more than any boat, and the 4.9 rating rests on 132 reviews. It suits people who want to paddle into the caves rather than float past them. The booking page lists people with back problems, people with heart problems and non-swimmers as not suitable.
Before you book
- Sea conditions decide the route and sometimes the trip. With a rough sea the skipper changes sides or the trip can be cancelled. The cancellation terms are on each booking page, not here.
- Minimum age is not stated on the pages we read. Life jackets are listed for the €36, €37.44 and €27 trips, the last one on request, so ask about children’s sizes if you bring small children. People prone to seasickness are listed as not suitable for the €36, €27 and €20 trips.
- Getting there without a car is slow. Public buses from Lecce to Leuca run a handful of times a day and take around two hours or more, so check the current timetable before you plan a morning departure. If you would rather drive, you can compare car hire for Lecce and check parking: the €20 trip lists free parking next to the start and the €36 trip lists free parking within walking distance of the boarding point.
Leuca in a bigger day
Many visitors pair Leuca with Otranto and Gallipoli. That is possible on a long guided day, but it makes for a lot of driving; our guide to Salento in a day explains the trade-offs. If you would rather stay on the water, all boat options are collected under Salento boat tours, and you can see everything else in the area under day trips from Lecce.
