Salento in One Day: Otranto, Leuca and Gallipoli by Tour or Rental Car?

Updated October 19, 2026 · 7 min read

Aerial view of Gallipoli's old town on its small island, ringed by walls and turquoise sea

Otranto on the Adriatic, Santa Maria di Leuca at the tip of the heel, Gallipoli on the Ionian side: these three are the classic Salento day trip from Lecce, and several operators sell all of them in one tour. The honest question is whether that is a good day or just a long one.

What the driving adds up to

Routing sites give these times for the legs. They are driving times only, without a single stop:

  • Lecce to Otranto: about 38 km and 42 minutes by the direct road
  • Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca: about 55 km along the coast, a little over an hour
  • Santa Maria di Leuca to Gallipoli: about 53 km and 50 minutes
  • Gallipoli back to Lecce: roughly another 40 km

That is around 185 km and about three and a half hours behind the wheel. In an 8-hour day, you have four and a half hours left for three towns, a lunch and a swim. It is possible, but it is a sampler. You see each place from the car park to the main square and back.

What a guided day gives you, and what it costs

Four day tours from Lecce cover this ground. Prices are per person and come from GetYourGuide.

The €134 tour is the one for most people. Its 4.9 rating comes from 190 reviews, and it takes in the three headline towns plus Galatina. Its listing describes the route as a day along the coast from the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea. The €115 van tour is cheaper and has slightly more reviews, but the rating of 4.4 is clearly lower. Two limits on the €134 tour: its itinerary gives Leuca a 15-minute visit, and the listing says it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments. The €115 listing says no guide service is included, with stops of 30 to 90 minutes.

The €120 tour skips Leuca. If the sea caves are what you came for, this is the wrong one. A separate boat trip from Leuca gets you onto the water, and without a bus or van to catch, you can spend the time you like on it. Its itinerary gives Gallipoli 2.5 hours, Galatina 105 minutes and Otranto 2 hours, and the listing says it is not suitable for pregnant women or people with mobility impairments.

The €200 tour crams in the most. With five stops it is the hardest to enjoy in eight hours, and 25 reviews are thin evidence. The listing says it is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments or people with claustrophobia, and its itinerary gives Otranto 1.5 hours and Leuca and Gallipoli an hour each.

The number to look for is minutes per stop. The itineraries on the booking pages list them, though they are marked as for reference only, so check them before you choose; that decides whether this is a good day or a long one.

When the car is better

Drive yourself if you want to swim properly, eat lunch where you like, or stay longer at one place than the group would. The cost is the planning:

  • Pick two stops, not three. Otranto plus a beach stop is an easy day. Gallipoli plus the Ionian beaches is another.
  • Watch the traffic zones. Gallipoli’s old town has a seasonal limited-traffic zone with cameras. Reports put it at 1 June to 30 September, from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., but dates and hours change, so check the town’s page. Otranto has several zones around the old town. Park outside and walk.
  • Expect to pay for parking. Summer rates in Gallipoli’s paid areas are around €2 an hour.
  • Add the rental to the budget. A rental car for the day is not automatically cheaper than a €134 tour for two people once fuel, parking and the deposit are counted. You can compare car hire for Lecce and see the excess and deposit before you decide.

Without either

Public transport works for one town, not for a loop. A bus from Lecce to Otranto takes between one and one and a half hours, according to routing sites, so Otranto alone is realistic by bus. We cover it in Otranto from Lecce, and the town on the Ionian side in Gallipoli from Lecce. All day tours are collected under day trips from Lecce.
