Gallipoli from Lecce: Old Town, Beach or Boat Trip?

Updated October 19, 2026 · 6 min read

A guide and cyclists on e-bikes riding along the seafront past the fortress walls of Gallipoli

One thing first: this is the Gallipoli in Puglia, not the Turkish peninsula. Booking sites mix the two: a two-day trip from Istanbul to Troy and Gallipoli shows up alongside the Salento tours. Check the departure city before you book.

The Salento Gallipoli is a fishing town on the Ionian coast, about 40 km from Lecce. Its old town sits on a small limestone island joined to the mainland by an old stone bridge, with a castle at the entrance and walls around the edge.

Getting there

By road it is roughly 40 km. By train, the local company Ferrovie del Sud Est runs between Lecce and Gallipoli, and routing sites put the journey at between an hour and a half and an hour and three quarters. Services are reported to be infrequent, so check the timetable and the last train back before you plan a day around it.

If you drive, expect restrictions in summer. Gallipoli’s old town has a seasonal limited-traffic zone with cameras. Reports give 1 June to 30 September, 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., but dates change, so check the town’s information. Paid parking in summer has been around €2 an hour. You can compare car hire for Lecce and decide on the day whether the flexibility is worth the parking hunt.

A half day on your own

The old town is small. Cross the bridge, walk the lanes, look at the castle and the walls, and have lunch by the harbour. That is two or three hours. The beach of Spiaggia della Purità lies on the edge of the old town, below the walls, so a swim fits in between sights. Baia Verde, a longer beach zone south of the new town, is the other option, a few kilometres from the old town.

Choosing

For most people, a self-guided half day is enough, and the e-bike tour is the active upgrade. The ride from Lecce to Gallipoli has a 4.9 rating from 68 reviews, includes a swim, and the private taxi back means you do not have to cycle home. The listing does not give the distance covered, so ask about it and the pace if you are not a regular rider.

The sailing tour is the one for a full day on the water. It is listed under Gallipoli, runs seven hours and costs €120, which is a lot for a 4.4 rating from 25 reviews. The island reachable only by sea is the draw. Compare it with the shorter boat trips from Leuca if you want caves.

The sunset boat party is for a party. The listing describes live music, drinks and more than a hundred other people. If you want a quiet sunset on the water, look elsewhere.

The cooking class is the indoor option. At €100 for 2.5 hours it is expensive, and 13 reviews at 4.8 is a small base.

The underground olive mill is a short stop, not a tour. At 30 minutes and €14 it is cheap, but the 2.9 rating from 65 reviews is the lowest of any tour in this guide. Read the recent reviews before you book.

The full-day Gallipoli, Galatina and Otranto tour gives you the town at your own pace, but most of the day goes on the road. For the case for and against such a day, see Salento in a day.

Otranto, on the other coast, needs a different plan, which we set out in Otranto from Lecce. All full-day options are under day trips from Lecce, and the active ones under e-bike tours in Lecce.
