Otranto from Lecce: Cathedral Mosaic, Old Town and Beaches in One Day
Updated October 19, 2026 · 6 min read
Otranto is one of the easiest Salento coast towns to reach from Lecce, and it gives a lot for a single day. It has a cathedral with one of the great medieval mosaic floors in Italy, a castle on the harbour, a compact old town and bays on both sides.
Getting there
By road it is about 38 km, which routing sites put at around 42 minutes. By bus it takes roughly one to one and a half hours and costs a few euros, according to those same sites, so check the current timetable and last return before you commit to a full day.
If you drive, mind the limited-traffic zones. Otranto has three of them, and the old town is inside one. Park outside and walk in. If you would rather have the freedom, you can compare car hire for Lecce, and our guide to Salento in a day explains why a coastal loop needs far more planning than Otranto alone.
What is worth your time in town
The cathedral floor. The mosaic covers the whole nave and was laid in the middle of the 12th century by a priest named Pantaleone. It mixes scenes from the Old Testament with myths and animals, and sources put its date at 1165. Allow at least half an hour; the whole story is underfoot.
The chapel of the martyrs. Inside the cathedral are the remains of the people killed when the Ottomans took the town in 1480, kept in glass cases. The martyrs were canonised in 2013. It is a sombre place, and worth knowing about before you walk in with children.
The Aragonese castle. This 15th-century fortress sits by the harbour and the sea. Opening hours change with the season, with longer evening hours in summer, so look up the current times. Arrive in the morning if you want it quiet.
The old town and the walls. The streets are narrow and the old town is a limited-traffic zone. An hour wandering them is enough.
Beaches
The beaches are the reason many people stay all day. Baia dei Turchi lies north of the town, and the bays south of it, including Baia delle Orte, are named in one of the hike listings below. Check the sea conditions before you go.

Choosing
For most people, go on your own and add the boat trip. The cathedral, castle and old town need no guide, and the €58 boat excursion is the best-supported of the Otranto-based options, with 4.9 from 86 reviews. It combines swimming stops with an aperitif. The listing says it is not suitable for pregnant women, people prone to seasickness or motion sickness, or people with high blood pressure.
The van tours are for people who do not want to drive. The €90 coastal tour has a 4.0 rating from 19 reviews, which is the weakest in the table. The €115 tour has 200 reviews but gives Otranto only a share of the nine hours. If Otranto is the point, it is the wrong tour.
The hike is for walkers. The listing describes a guided 7 km walk with a swim at Baia delle Orte and a taxi back, but it has four reviews, so treat the 5.0 with care. The walk starts at Porta Rudiae in Lecce, and the taxi takes about 35 minutes each way.
