Salento with Kids: Beaches and Tours That Work for Families

Updated October 19, 2026 · 6 min read

Pale limestone cliffs with dark cave openings above clear turquoise water

Salento suits families more than its Baroque reputation suggests. The best-known family beaches are sandy and shelve slowly, the swim-stop boat trips are short, and Lecce itself is compact. What the listings rarely say is where small children are a poor fit, and that is where this guide spends its time.

Beaches: sand and a slow slope

Italian travel guides single out three stretches for children.

San Cataldo is the closest to Lecce: about 12 km from the centre by most accounts. The sand is fine, the water is calm and the seabed deepens slowly. It is lined with paid beach clubs (stabilimenti balneari), which is why it is popular with families.

Torre dell’Orso, on the Adriatic coast in the municipality of Melendugno, has pale, soft sand and water that stays shallow and clear near the shore, with plenty of room on the sand to play.

The Ionian coast, including Porto Cesareo, has very light sand, clear water and a gentle drop-off, which is what young swimmers want. Baia dei Turchi lies north of Otranto, in the protected coastal area near the Alimini lakes; we cover Otranto’s beaches in Otranto from Lecce.

We have not checked shade, toilets or parking at any of these, and the listings do not mention them either, so look at current beach information before you pack for a toddler. Beaches sit outside the old town, so a car makes beach days easier: you can compare car hire for Lecce.

The boat trips are the safest bet. The three-hour listing describes the atmosphere as right for couples, families and groups of friends, includes life jackets and inflatables, and lists swim stops in coves reachable only by sea. None of the boat listings we read states a minimum age, so ask before booking with babies and toddlers. The same listings say they are not suitable for people prone to seasickness; if your child gets sick in cars or on ferries, ask a paediatrician or pharmacist before the trip.

The bird park is the one family outing outside Lecce, apart from the boats, that we found. The listing promises breakfast with parrots, birds of prey and other species in their aviaries, and a visit to the stables of Spanish horses. The listed duration is unreliable, the page is reservation-by-phone and it has only ten reviews, so call before you drive out.

The children’s workshop is a sit-down hour in the old town. The listing describes workshops suitable for children of all ages, led by a local craftsman in the historic centre of Lecce, where each child makes a small object. It is in Italian and has two reviews, so it works best for children who like making things regardless of language.

The bike tour only works with a certain kind of family. A minimum of two adults is required to start and under-18s must be accompanied. A reviewer said their children enjoyed it.

When it is a bad idea

The all-day group tours. The van tour of Otranto, Castro, Leuca and Gallipoli runs about nine hours, and the Otranto, Leuca, Gallipoli and Galatina tour about eight. That is a long time in a vehicle for small children, who will spend much of the day being driven rather than playing. Our guide to Salento in a day explains the trade-offs.

The kayak tour. The listing does not give a minimum age, lists non-swimmers among those it is not suitable for and asks for moderate fitness. Read the Leuca kayak guide before you consider it with older children.

Wine and oil tastings. One of the estate visits serves alcohol only to guests aged 18 and over; younger guests get non-alcoholic options. It is fine, but it is an adult outing. See wine tasting in Lecce.

Minimum ages and what to check

Operators set their own limits, and where a number is not in the description we do not give one. For every booking, read the participation notes on the booking page and message the operator about your child’s age and size before you pay. Boat trips can be cancelled for weather, so keep a back-up plan on shore. All boat options are under Salento boat tours, and everything else is under things to do in Lecce.
